Tyres are the only point of contact between the vehicle and the road. They therefore play a major role in road holding, as Claire Dufossé, safety and signalling expert at APRR, points out: “This is a check point to be made before each departure, checking the wear and inflation of your tyres to ensure good adherence to the road”.
A week before departure, a visit to a garage or an inflation station may be necessary. A puncture on a road or motorway can be a big setback, even if means of repair exist.
“When you are on the edge of the traffic lanes, this could represent a risk,” confirms Claire Dufossé. Avoiding a tyre blow-out can prevent an accident. When you lose control, you could hit the restraints or another vehicle. Hence the importance of properly checking your tyres before leaving, for your own safety and that of others…”
Inflation stations at service areas
As you travel to your holiday destination, you can check your tyre pressure. “Motorway service areas are equipped with inflation stations,” says Claire Dufossé. Don’t hesitate to use them if you didn't have time to do so before leaving or if you're on a long journey.”
Advice that also applies to towed trailers, motorhomes and caravans, especially if they have not been used for a long time. The ideal pressure is mentioned in the vehicle manual, on the driver door label or on the fuel cap. Finally, remember to check the tyre wear indicators. Too worn and they’ll cause aquaplaning on a wet road surface.
The APRR group’s communication campaign is displayed at its tolls, service areas and on its variable message signs. It is also featured on the Autoroute INFO airwaves (107.7), the APRR social networks (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter) and the Waze app.
