Following several years of works carried out in a complex urban environment, the A480 and the Rondeau interchange have finally, on the whole, given a new look to one of Grenoble’s main entry points. With a total investment of €453 million, of which €300 million was funded by AREA under its concession contract, the project is one of the most significant development schemes carried out in recent years on the concession network.

An urban motorway reinvented

The aim of the project was clear: to restore the A480’s role as the backbone of transport in the metropolitan area whilst improving its integration into the local landscape. To achieve this, AREA oversaw the widening of the motorway to 2x3 lanes over a distance of 7.5 kilometres, whilst ensuring that traffic flow of nearly 100,000 vehicles per day was maintained throughout the works. This modernisation was accompanied by more efficient traffic flow management, notably through the separation of traffic at the Rondeau junction and speed limits adapted to the urban environment.

Almost four years after the gradual opening of the improvements, the results are clear to see. Daily traffic on the A480 has increased by around 6 per cent, whilst several secondary urban roads have seen a significant reduction in traffic. This development confirms the motorway’s return to its role as a key transport artery and contributes to smoother traffic flow throughout the Grenoble metropolitan area.

An exemplary project serving all road users

Beyond its impact on road performance, the A480/Rondeau project was conceived as a comprehensive mobility initiative. Working in close coordination with central government, local authorities and local stakeholders, AREA has helped to create facilities that facilitate everyday travel:

• new, safe cycle and pedestrian routes;

• a footbridge dedicated to sustainable modes of transport at Le Rondeau;

• facilities to facilitate intermodal travel;

• new bus stops and improved connections to public transport.

This approach reflects AREA’s commitment to supporting changes in mobility by providing infrastructure suited to all uses, in line with local transport policies.

Balancing performance and the green transition

One of the project’s key features is its environmental ambition. From the very outset, the development incorporated measures designed to minimise its impact on natural habitats and enhance biodiversity. A total of 54,500 trees and shrubs were planted, with priority given wherever possible to species sourced from local nurseries. The development has also led to the creation of wetlands, the complete overhaul of the sewerage system and the implementation of numerous measures to support flora and fauna. Environmental monitoring carried out since the project came into operation demonstrates the effectiveness of this approach. Natural habitats have been preserved, the area’s ecological richness has been maintained, and some protected species are even showing positive trends. This focus on the environment is fully in line with AREA’s commitment to more sustainable infrastructure that is better integrated into its local environment.

A tangible improvement in the quality of life for local residents

The redevelopment of the A480 has also helped to reduce noise pollution for local residents. Some 7 kilometres of sound-absorbing noise barriers have been installed along the route. Designed to blend in with the various neighbourhoods they pass through, these innovative structures combine acoustic performance, landscaping and architectural enhancement. Initial assessments highlight a significant reduction in noise levels as well as an improvement in air quality in the vicinity of the motorway. These results demonstrate the commitment of AREA and its partners to ensuring the motorway is sustainably integrated into its urban environment.

A continuing momentum

The A480/Rondeau project represents a major milestone, but it forms part of a broader vision for transport planning in the Grenoble region. Under its concession agreement with the State, AREA is pursuing several key projects, including the creation of a 3-kilometre-long dedicated public transport lane on the southern section of the A480, the development of a multimodal transport hub in the Voreppe/L’Île Rose area, and new infrastructure designed to strengthen connections between different modes of transport.

Through these projects, AREA reaffirms its role as a committed partner working alongside local authorities to develop efficient, safe and sustainable infrastructure capable of meeting the expectations of today’s users and the challenges of tomorrow.
