Hochmosel Bridge, the biggest German steel viaduct

Extreme foundations

The Hochmosel bridge is one of the biggest steel viaducts constructed in Germany. Located in Rhineland-Palatinate, 1,700 m long, this motorway bridge, at its highest point, will tower 155m above the Moselle river when it is commissioned in late 2018. With eleven spans from 104 m to 210 m in length, it will be supported by 50 m deep foundations, and will weigh nearly 13,000 tonnes.

The mixed structure, combining concrete and steel caissons, is specific to the Hochmosel bridge, connecting Benelux to the city of Frankfurt. It is built by a consortium between the Eiffage Métal factories in Hanover and those of Lauterbourg.
