Tunnel on the Lyon–Turin rail line

Eiffage, Spie Batignolles, Ghella and Cogeis were together awarded Works Package 1 for the base tunnel on the French side of the Lyon–Turin railway line, between Villarodin Bourget/Modane and Italy. The railway tunnel, which crosses the Alps and connects France and Italy, is one of the longest in the world with a distance of 115 kilometers (2 x 57.5 kilometers).

The project:

This contract includes:

  • Excavation of a 22-kilometre twin-tube tunnel, using two tunnel boring machines for the dual 18-kilometre stretch toward Turin and traditional methods for the dual 4-kilometre section toward Lyon.
  • Creation of the safety site at Modane, connecting galleries, and refuges and cross-tunnels for operational use and safety.

Reduction of carbon emissions and reuse of materials

The consortium is committed to a substantial reduction in carbon emissions on this project, in particular by reusing material excavated from the tunnel to make concrete.
