Amazing! Spectacular scenery meets the eyes of Eiffage Génie Civil’s teams

The tunnel boring machine Augustine was operating in Janots tunnel at La Ciotat when it came upon a cavity. A spectacular cave was revealed.

The cave has been christened "Marie Lesimple" after the geologist who first entered it with engineer Salah-Edinne Chatouani. It is apparently several million years old, and yet no trace of life has been found in it.

"You feel so small and insignificant when you look at these wonders of nature” said Loïc Thevenot, Underground Works Manager for Eiffage Génie Civil, admiring the impressive scenery on this incredible site.

May we remind you that Janots tunnel (135 m long with a 3.5 m diameter) bored by TBM Augustine is to bring water from Marseille Canal from Cassis to La Ciotat (Bouches-du-Rhône). The project is scheduled for completion in late 2018.
