Belfort: APRR roars even louder!

On June 1st, Philippe Nourry, President, Motorway Concessions at Eiffage, together with Florian Bouquet, President of the Department of Territoire de Belfort, unveiled a brand new set of cultural and tourist signs located on the A36. The five visual images, displayed on six “brown signs”, are signed by Fred Van Deelen. And the emblematic Lion of Belfort figures majestically on them all. In-depth explanation...

Five new visual images featured on six signs
With some 120 m2 of signage surface area entirely renewed, APRR has taken the lion’s share in cultural and tourist signage in the Territoire de Belfort on the A36. Six signs, each 20 m2, were unveiled in a preview that took place on Tuesday June 1st, 2021. “The idea is to break the monotony of the journey, and promote the remarkable monuments or sites of the Department you are going through”, explains Philippe Nourry, President, Motorway Concessions at Eiffage (see the video attached to the official press release).
Drivers and passengers now have the opportunity to locate, identify graphically and maybe even discover preserved natural sites, leading to relaxation, escape...and even adventure.
Among these, the Lac de Malsaucy, a body of water that has retained its wild side. You can reach it in just a few turns by taking exit 14.1 off the A36 for Fontaine.
The “Lion King" of Belfort too is majestically illustrated by a sign located ahead of exit no. 6 (direction Beaune-Mulhouse), which will take you in no time to the city of Belfort. The famous Lion of Belfort and the eponymous citadel have also recently been voted the favourite monument of the French.

A leading illustrator: Fred Van Deelen
The celebrated multilingual Dutch illustrator, Fred Van Deelen, was chosen to create the visual images of the A36 “brown signs” and, in this instance, those of Territoire de Belfort.
This wizard of imagery has more than one magic potion in his bag, masterfully creating watercolours, Indian ink and scratchboard drawings, and works using acrylics, etc.
Forty years after the first cultural and tourism brown signs were installed, APRR is now re-affirming its ambition to turn its network into an open-air art gallery!
To achieve this, the motorway group has called on artists of recognised talent, such as comic illustrators (Floch), graphic designers (Tino) and renowned illustrators (Zoé and, of course, Fred Van Deelen), all supremos of the artist’s colour palette keen to uncover and open up uncharted territories.
The “brown sign” adventure continues...
