Good news for the Pierre-Mauroy Stadium! The complex in Villeneuve-d’Ascq (N. France), built and operated by Eiffage, which previously hosted the final of the 2014 Davis Cup, the final stages of the 2015 European Basketball Championship and six Euro 2016 matches, has now been selected to host the Handball World Championship on 21, 22 and 24 January 2017, for two of the knockout stages – including for the French team if they qualify – and a quarter final match.

The stadium is fully equipped to host outdoor and indoor sporting events, thanks to its retractable roof that can be closed in just 30 minutes, and this week it is switching to arena mode to install the handball pitch. Teams working at the venue have had a busy week closing the roof on Monday, raising the curtains on Tuesday, installing the sound and lighting equipment on Wednesday, and laying the wooden flooring on Thursday.

Efforts of the teams working at the stadium have paid off, with no less than eight events scheduled for the first half of 2017. It’s a rich and varied programme, reinforcing the stadium’s position as a leading sporting arena – with the Handball World Championship, as well as Lille LOSC FC championship matches, and on 25 March a match between celebrated rugby clubs Racing 92 and Clermont. But also as a concert venue – with major music events including Bruno Mars on 31 March, Dépêche Mode on 29 May, Les Prodiges on 2 June, Les Vieilles Canailles on 10 June, and the North Summer Festival on 24 and 25 June that has several stars headlining, including Justin Bieber, Sting and Ibrahim Maalouf.
