Highlights of the sustainable city conference
On Thursday 4 April 2013, at a conference organised in Paris as part of Sustainable Development Week, Eiffage presented its innovative vision for a sustainable city by the year 2030, in partnership with Dassault Systèmes, world leader in 3-D design software, and POMA, world leading cable transport systems company.
In 2007, Eiffage set up “Phosphore”, its own research and prospective laboratory specialised in sustainable urban development, drawing contributions from colleagues in all the Group’s divisions - construction, public works, energy, metals and concessions – as well as from experts in the urbanism, climate and social sciences fields.
Within this framework, Eiffage teams have carried out life-size studies for three different areas presenting very different climate and geographical issues - Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône), Strasbourg (Bas-Rhin) and the Grenoble Urban District (Isère) – focusing on the challenges arising from climate change and appropriate solutions to prepare for these.
Eiffage is not only interested in channelling its research and development efforts into new construction methods and processes that produce less greenhouse gas emissions.
It is also seeking to adopt a truly global approach to sustainable urban development. In addition to the issue of climate change, Phosphore also takes into account socio-demographic evolutions – divorce rates, changing family structures, aging population – and their impact in terms of related needs (housing, urban services,…). Phosphore seeks to promote solutions that break with traditional techniques and which focus more on the user.
Dassault Systèmes Design Studio works alongside the R&D laboratory, providing expertise in industrial design, interface design, mobility systems 3-D conceptual design, and enabling proposals from Phosphore to be projected and validated. And with its cable systems, POMA provides a “carbon-free” and flexible transport solution. Its collaboration with Eiffage aims to demonstrate the feasibility of this mode of transport in the urban environment, by proposing cabins that meet current and future public transport standards and by validating their full compatibility with existing transport networks.
